中文裏，我們把道聽途說來的消息稱作“小道消息”，英文裏其實也有相似的表達，這裏的消息是從哪兒聽來的呢?

Grapevine!就是葡萄藤!Through the grapevine的意思實際上就和中文裏說的：通過小道消息來的一樣。也就是說，這個消息是經過人們口頭傳播傳到他這兒來的，他也不知道到底是從誰那兒開始的。

早在一百多年前，當美國南北戰爭正在進行的時刻，士兵們把那些非官方渠道來的消息，也就是祕密地在他們中間傳播的消息稱爲grapevine。下面這個例子就是一個士兵正在把一個消息告訴他的要好朋友：

例句-1: "What do you think of the news that our regiment is being transferred to California. It's not announced officially yet, but this morning I got it through the grapevine."
